We have been asked many times if people can send data from our systems directly to their own software without going through our servers first.

We released the Controller API in 2011 which enabled you to do this at one level, but you had to leave a PC running permanently next to the controllers all the time to make it work really well.

I’m pleased to say that we’ve now addressed this and released the “Smart Energy Controller” (details here) that enables you to do exactly that.

It’s based on the popular Raspberry Pi linux computer and features a full, two way, EWAPI interface which you can either use “as is” or customise to your own requirements by modifying the open source C code that we’ll be releasing into the forum later this week. As the EWAPI core that plugs onto the Raspberry Pi’s GPIO header primarily uses 9600,n,8,1 serial comms, modifying the code to produce your own energy management system should be pretty straight forward. As you have got the full resources of the Pi available, we’re envisaging people writing their own energy management web servers and communications gateways and display dashboards … it’s all possible 🙂

Let me know what you think and if you feel like trying it out, head over to your nearest reseller or use the online store.

Hope you like it,
D.
