The EA have just released their latest ESOS newsletter and are advising that organisations that fall into ESOS should ‘be prepared’ for Phase 2 and start their compliance process now. With the data preparation period underway, organisations should be beginning to work on their energy audits and energy saving opportunities – remember, your energy audits need to contain at least one full year’s worth of data. The EA has also released an interim ESOS evaluation report that identifies findings regarding to ESOS Phase 1 compliance, but also the benefits that organisations have found since.

Start early or pay more

According to the EA, during Phase 1 there was a spike in ESOS organisations taking action  one month before the Dec 2015 deadline meaning resources were stretched. This stretch resulted in a sharp increase in pricing to secure an assessor and a reduction in perceived value for money. The EA reported that there were some organisations that has to delay compliance due to shortage of assessors being able to conduct site visits. The overarching point being that it’s crucial for ESOS organisations to secure their lead assessor early this year – the EA are set to tighten regulations for late compliance.

A brief overview of ESOS so far

Four out of five organisations reported that they have had some form of energy efficiency improvement in the 18 months prior to mid-2016. And a third of these claim that ESOS had been a pivotal moment in their decision to implement these improvements.

Nearly half of all compliant organisations that were surveyed found that there was an increase in interest on all levels, including board-level, in energy efficiency as a direct result of ESOS.

82% of compliers who owned or leased vehicles also reported implementing fuel efficiency improvements within this same time. And one in five of those directly attributed ESOS to the improvement of fuel efficiency.
