DPP Compliance

DIGITAL PRODUCT PASSPORT

What is a Digital Product Passport?

A DPP is a legally required digital identity that will accompany products sold in the EU. It contains standardised information on a product’s materials, origin, environmental performance, compliance, repairability, and end-of-life instructions. It provides regulators, customers, and supply chains with complete transparency.

From 2027, key product groups cannot enter the EU market without a DPP. By 2030, this will expand to nearly all major categories under the ESPR. There are no SME exemptions, without a compliant DPP, your product cannot be sold.

Preparing early is essential, as businesses must build new data systems, traceability, and documentation processes to stay compliant. Enistic handles the entire DPP creation process for you, from validating your data and structuring it in accordance with EU requirements, to digitalising it in line with ESPR, CPR, and upcoming technical specifications.

Measure

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and are the reference point against which emission reductions can be measured.

Aims and targets

Targets allow you to judge whether the plans you made to reduce your carbon emissions are working, and whether the reductions achieved are meaningful.

Reduce

Select best carbon reduction projects for you and your business, based on your values, the cost, and likely payback time.

Track

Track your carbon emissions to reflect the changes and compare how well you are doing against the targets.

Offset

Offset schemes work by paying volunteers, companies or charities to do things which ‘negate’ your carbon emissions, for example, planting trees.

Certify

Certification is a valuable process that provides checks and balances for the sector.

DPP vs EPD – What’s the difference?

When documenting a product’s environmental and technical information, the correct approach depends on the level of detail, regulation, and transparency you need to deliver. DPPs and EPDs both support credible product data but serve very different purposes

DPPs are used when you need a comprehensive, legally compliant digital record of your product’s materials, performance, repairability, and environmental data for market access, supply chain traceability, and long-term regulatory.

EPDs are for when you require a full environmental profile across multiple impact categories. EPDs are essential for formal compliance, major project requirements, and public disclosure. Learn more about EPDs here.

If you require EU-ready product transparency and regulatory compliance, a DPP is the right tool.

If you need a verified environmental declaration for projects and public disclosure, choose an EPD.

Why should you get a DPP?

DPPs are becoming one of the most significant regulatory requirements in the EU. Preparing ahead ensures uninterrupted market access and strengthens your competitive position.

With a DPP, you can:

  • Keep your products legally eligible for sale in the EU
  • Build customer trust with verified, traceable data
  • Demonstrate compliance with ESPR, CPR, and sustainability rules
  • Improve performance in procurement and supply-chain assessments
  • Support repairability and circular-economy initiatives
  • Reduce regulatory risks before enforcement begins

Frequently asked questions – DPPs

Who needs a DPP?

Manufacturers, importers, and distributors selling products in the EU will need a DPP once their product category becomes regulated. Without a compliant DPP, affected products cannot legally be sold.

What is the difference between a DPP and an EPD?

DPPs capture full product transparency—covering materials, compliance, traceability, and sustainability. An EPD is an independently verified document that reports a product’s environmental impact across its entire lifecycle.

An EPD contributes to a DPP, but a DPP is broader and mandatory for many EU product categories.

When do I need a DPP by?

DPPs will become mandatory in phases. The first product groups, such as batteries, textiles, and consumer electronics must have a compliant DPP by 2027. Additional categories will follow through 2028–2030. It is best to prepare early to avoid delays and ensure uninterrupted EU market access.

How long does it take to get a DPP?

At Enistic, we can produce a fully compliant, ready-to-use DPP for you within a week.

What standards are used for DPPs?

DPPs are governed by the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR). They also align with related EU frameworks, including the Construction Products Regulation (CPR), Battery Regulation, WEEE, REACH, and digital interoperability standards.
