Is your business registered with Companies House?
BICS is only open to companies on the Companies House register. Sole traders and partnerships cannot apply without incorporating first.
Do you manufacture physical products at a site in England, Scotland or Wales?
The scheme covers Great Britain only. Sites that only store, distribute or administer do not count as manufacturing sites.
Which sector best describes what the site makes?
Eligibility is set by 4 digit SIC code and 6 digit HS product code. Pick the closest match and we'll confirm the exact codes with you.
How much grid electricity does the site use in a year?
Use your most recent 12 months of bills. Exclude anything you generate on site (solar, CHP, wind), as BICS only applies to grid supply.
1 MWh = 1,000 kWh. A mid sized factory typically uses anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand MWh a year.
Roughly what share of the site's electricity goes into eligible products?
Include production lines plus the supporting activity behind them (HVAC, compressed air, lighting, offices, R&D). If everything you make is in scope, choose the first option.
Does the site already hold an EII certificate under the British Industry Supercharger?
You can hold both, but the same electricity cannot be exempted twice. If part of the meter is already covered, BICS applies only to the remainder.

This checker gives an indicative view only. Final eligibility is decided by the Department for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade following a full application. Savings are estimated from published Renewables Obligation, Feed-in Tariff and Capacity Market cost projections and will vary with your supplier, contract and consumption.

Eligibility is assessed site by site, not company-wide, so a business can qualify at one location and not another.
1. Registered at Companies House, with an eligible SIC code recorded against the business.
2. You manufacture a product on the eligible HS code list.
3. The site is in England, Scotland or Wales.
4. At least 33 MWh of grid electricity a year at the site.

The BICS pre-application pack
If you qualify, this is exactly what we do. You review everything before a single form is submitted.
- Your SIC and product HS codes checked against the eligible lists
- Every qualifying manufacturing site identified
- MPANs and six months of electricity bills reviewed
- Eligible manufacturing consumption calculated, and your band confirmed
- Full supporting evidence pack prepared
- Application completed and submitted on your behalf
- Your 2027 payment verified when it arrives
- Your supplier checked, to confirm the exemption is applied at the right value
