5 Practical Ways to Reduce Energy Consumption for Retailers
With the ESOS Phase 2 data capture period beginning in January 2018, it’s time for retailers to start thinking about ESOS. Among the various building types in the UK commercial sector, retail sites are found to be the most energy intensive.
HVAC systems, lighting and the refrigeration units usually account for the bulk of a retail building energy consumption. With the ever rising energy bill and the concerns about climate change, the cost associated with all of these can be easily reduced, if the business knows where to look at and what to do.
Only a small percentage of site managers felt that ESOS had helped support the energy efficiency initiative. This highlights that using a key assessor with extensive understanding and experience is key to unlocking any benefit.
Here are some tips to reduce your carbon and energy usage:
1. Lighting
Install occupancy sensors where security or cleaning staff may work late out of hours. These sensors can help reduce the lighting cost by up to 30%.
2. Refrigeration Â
Ensure that correct temperature are set in order to avoid over-cooling. If the set cooling temperature can be safely increased by 1ËšC, the energy cost can be reduced by 2-4%.
3. Heating
Reduce set point temperature. A 1ËšC temperature reduction, which is hardly noticeable, can cut the heating bill by up to 10%.
4. Ventillation and Air ConditioningÂ
Check if you can take advantage of natural ventilation. It may be possible to use different pathways such as doors and windows in order to provide a satisfactory level of natural ventilation, thus allowing the mechanical system to be shut down.
5. Building Fabric
Ensure that roof and any external cavity wall are properly insulated, as more than 25% of heat is lost mainly via an uninsulated roof, but why stop there?
