Step 1: Collecting the Raw Data

Step 2: Applying the Right Emission Factor
Every unit of activity, a litre of diesel, a kilowatt-hour of electricity, a tonne of waste, has a corresponding emission factor: a figure that converts that activity into a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) figure. Enistic maintains a database of over 40,000 UK and EU government approved emission factors, covering fuel types, vehicle types, energy types, and product composition. Step 3: Organising by Scope
Once calculated, emissions are organised into Scope 1 (direct emissions from sources you own or control), Scope 2 (emissions from purchased electricity, heat or steam), and Scope 3 (everything else in your value chain, from purchased goods to business travel to supplier emissions). This structure follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the internationally recognised standard for carbon accounting.
Step 4: Flagging Gaps
