How Enistic AI Calculates Your Carbon Footprint

“What’s our carbon footprint?” sounds like a simple question. Getting a reliable answer is not simple at all, it depends on gathering the right data, applying the right emission factors, and adding it all up correctly across every scope. This post explains, in plain terms, how Enistic AI turns your raw data into a carbon footprint you can stand behind.

 

Step 1: Collecting the Raw Data

Your footprint starts with real activity data: fuel used in vehicles and machinery, electricity and gas consumption, business travel, waste, and where relevant, supplier and product data for your wider value chain. Enistic AI pulls this in from uploaded bills, invoices, and connected data sources, rather than asking you to manually key in numbers line by line.

 

Step 2: Applying the Right Emission Factor

Every unit of activity, a litre of diesel, a kilowatt-hour of electricity, a tonne of waste, has a corresponding emission factor: a figure that converts that activity into a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) figure. Enistic maintains a database of over 40,000 UK and EU government approved emission factors, covering fuel types, vehicle types, energy types, and product composition. Enistic AI matches your activity data to the correct factor automatically, rather than leaving it to manual lookup.

 

Step 3: Organising by Scope

Once calculated, emissions are organised into Scope 1 (direct emissions from sources you own or control), Scope 2 (emissions from purchased electricity, heat or steam), and Scope 3 (everything else in your value chain, from purchased goods to business travel to supplier emissions). This structure follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol), the internationally recognised standard for carbon accounting.

 

Step 4: Flagging Gaps

If data is missing or looks inconsistent, for example a site with no energy data for several months, Enistic AI flags it rather than silently estimating a number and moving on. Your named consultant reviews these flags and works with you to fill the gap properly.

 

Step 5: Expert Review

Before any footprint is finalised into a report, whether for ESOS, SECR, CSRD, or another framework, an in-house carbon consultant reviews the calculation. The AI does the heavy lifting on data processing and factor matching. A qualified person checks the output before it goes anywhere near a submission.
