What Are Emission Factors?

An emission factor is a standardised figure published by a government or recognised body, for example DEFRA in the UK, that tells you how much carbon dioxide equivalent is produced per unit of a given activity, a litre of diesel, a kilowatt-hour of grid electricity, a tonne of a particular material. Every carbon calculation depends on applying the correct, current factor to the right activity data.
